So, when you change 'brands' of firmware, you should clear NVRAM. A hard reset clears the NVRAM, then the firmware can reinitialize with its own defaults. dd-wrt and the stock firmware use different nvram variables, and worse, may interpret the same variable different ways. The NVRAM is not cleared when you flash firmware. Better than being stuck with a half-flashed router. I am actually not sure if the the wrt54gl v1.1 has this bug, but it doesn't hurt.

This is due to a bug in some versions of the linksys firmware which would fail if you tried to flash too large an image. The only tricky thing about flashing dd-wrt is that you have to flash the mini version before the standard version. My wife, who complained about stutter on our Vonage line when I used DD-WRT, quit complaining about Vonage when I switched to Tomato, because the QOS reserved upstream bandwidth. It took me 20 minutes to set up QOS and make it work perfectly.

(The command line is always an option.) Tomato's major plus is that it does QOS very well out of the box.

Tomato is ridiculously simple to use, although if you drill down in the menus there's quite a bit of configurability there. So you can have a publicly accessible SSID with no encryption, AND a private one with WPA2, that aren't visible from each other. Out of the box, it's pretty much useless, but the underlying framework is pretty powerful and if you add enough extensions and know what you're doing, you can make it do Cirque du Soleil type tricks.ĭD-WRT has one major feature to recommend it over Tomato: it can do multiple virtual WLANs. OpenWRT is sort of like using FooBar2000 as your media player. So what I'm posting is a bit personal experience and bit what I've heard. I have never used OpenWRT, and it has been a few generations since I used DD-WRT.

It's supposed to help if you have an old config before flashing, as some old versions used to store stuff in NVram that would persist even after a firmware update.Īnyway, not needed in a brand new router.Īnd as a note, OpenWRT is very good, but not really recommended for someone who is wondering how to flash their router for the first time. The 30/30/30 hard reset is a bit of snake oil. I'm more confused why you have to do that hard/30/30/30 reset before and after each firmware update. Small note to have in mind, after putting DD-WRT the router will ask for username/password and not just password. After doing that and the router reboots then you can flash the Standard image which installs the normal set of packages and unlock all features. 1) Go to and type in your model (WRT54GL)Ģ) Get these 2 files : dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin (The one that says about INITIAL flashing through web) and dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.binģ) Go to the webui of the stock Linksys firmware, flash first the Mini firmware.
